The LY-80 air defense missile has a relatively high design starting point, and the vertical cold launch method was adopted at the beginning of the design. After the missile is ejected from the launching box by the high-pressure gas, since the launching box is slightly outwardly tilted relative to the longitudinal section of the hull, the missile engine is not ignited until the missile has no power to fly out of the range of the ship's side. In the vertical thermal launch mode, if the missile fails to ignite, it will directly blow up the launch system and even damage the main structure of the ship.
There are four side fins in the middle of the LY-80 missile body, and the flight control of the missile is completed by the four full-motion rudder surfaces and the gas rudder at the tail of the missile body. The full-motion rudder surface of the missile is connected to the gas rudder with a metal connecting rod, which not only saves the need to design a servo mechanism for the gas rudder separately, but also reduces the overall weight of the missile; it also realizes the synchronous control of the full-motion tail and the gas rudder, enhancing the missile maneuverability.
