Description
Trinitrotoluene, also known as 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (abbreviation: TNT), is an organic compound with the chemical formula C7H5N3O6. It is a white or yellow needle-like crystal, odorless, and hygroscopic. It is a relatively safe explosive, resistant to impact and friction, but any amount suddenly heated can cause an explosion. It is moderately toxic. It can enter the body through the skin, respiratory tract, and digestive tract. It is produced by the nitration of toluene and has a melting point of 354 K (80.9°C). It appears as brown crystals (the pure product is a light yellow crystal). It is easily confused with picric acid and is mistakenly called "yellow explosive." When mixed with ammonium nitrate, it can form Amatol explosive.

Applications:
Trinitrotoluene (TNT) is a high-energy, stable, safe, and easily controlled military/industrial explosive. Its core applications fall into three categories: military explosives, industrial blasting, and chemical/scientific research reference materials.

I. Military Uses (Primary)
* Artillery shells, grenades, mortar shells, rocket warheads
* Aerial bombs, guided bombs, aerial bomb warheads
* Hand grenades, landmines, naval mines, torpedo warheads
* Explosives: Detonating charges, mine-clearing charges, obstacle-clearing packages
* Main Mixed Explosives:
* TNT + RDX (RDX): Commonly used in artillery shells/aerial bombs
* TNT + Ammonium nitrate (Amato): Low cost, high power
* TNT + Aluminum powder (Tonal): Enhances blasting/fragmentation effect
II. Industrial/Civilian Blasting
* Mining: Coal mines, metal mines, open-pit/underground blasting
* Infrastructure: Tunnels, water conservancy projects, road construction, quarries
* Construction: Directional demolition, old bridge/dilapidated building blasting
* Oil and Gas: Deep wells, underwater, fracturing blasting (small quantities)
III. Other Uses
* Explosive Equivalent Standard: 1 kg TNT = 4.184 MJ, the standard for measuring the power of all explosives
Chemical intermediates: dyes, photographic chemicals, pharmaceutical synthesis raw materials (very rare)
Research: Explosion mechanics, impact testing, material explosion resistance testing
Core characteristics (why use TNT)
Stability: Insensitive to impact and friction, unlikely to explode accidentally
Safety: Melting point ~80℃, can be melted and cast, suitable for large-scale explosive loading
Water resistance: Insoluble in water, usable underwater/in humid environments
Moderate power: High energy density, easy to control the power
